Covenant Shreveport Story

Covenant Shreveport was launched in 2018 by a group of families commissioned by The Covenant Church in Bossier City, Louisiana. After over a year of meeting in homes on Sunday evenings, we began gathering for weekly Sunday morning worship in October of 2019. We are best categorized as a gospel-centered, missional church with roots in the Baptist tradition. We believe strongly that the primary experience of church should not simply be about attending a religious event, but rather living life together in a community that is on mission for Jesus in the everyday. We also believe that Jesus has called us to go and make disciples of all nations, and that starts right here in Shreveport. So, to that end, we are very much neighborhood focused, seeking to love our neighbors well and bring good news to the places where we live, work and play.

Our Distinctives

Our Vision

Missionary Family

Scripture teaches that all believers, not just clergy, are actually priests who are empowered by the Holy Spirit and equipped with the gospel message of Jesus. (1 Peter 2:5-9) Our desire is that the primary “doing” of Covenant Shreveport would be that all who are a part of the church would see themselves as missionaries in their neighborhoods, workplaces and schools. We desire to be a people who gather together to worship God and encourage one-another, but then scatter to live lives on mission in the everyday, seeking to both declare and demonstrate the gospel in all we do.
Our Worship

Modern Liturgical

The goal of Christian worship is to give glory and honor to God, our author, and sustainer. During our Sunday worship gatherings, we are seeking in all ways to direct our attention and affection to God through prayer, singing, the proclamation of the gospel, the reading of Scripture and the sacraments (communion and baptism).
Our Theology

Gospel-Centered

We are all about Jesus, his good news message and his mission. Our beliefs are Biblical and mainstream, and we align with these classical Christian faith statements:

While our roots are in the Baptist tradition, our community includes people from a variety of denominational backgrounds. We welcome all because our primary banner is that of Christ who calls us all out of darkness and into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)
Our Mission

Discipleship-Focused

Scripture teaches that Christ’s mission for his church is to go and make disciples. (Matthew 28:16-20) Disciples are simply individuals who have placed their faith in Christ as their Savior and are, as a result, seeking to pattern their lives after his example. To this end, a disciple is a learner, and Christ is the one whom they are seeking to learn. Our discipleship process revolves around four key experiences:

  • Life together in a gospel-centered community
  • Biblical teaching
  • Personal coaching
  • Actualization of calling
Our Structure

Elder-led

Covenant Shreveport is led by a plurality of pastor/elders who each operate within their individual gifting to give leadership to an area of focus within the church. These leaders operate as peers within the organizational structure embracing a horizontal or “out front” leadership model rather than a “top down” model. As such, Covenant does not have a singular “Senior Pastor” or “Lead Pastor,” but, instead, a pastoral team that leads and teaches.
MISSION STATMENT

Covenant Shreveport exists to join God in His mission of reconciliation by declaring and demonstrating the gospel of Jesus in all of life.

Family Meals

On the last Sunday of each month our entire church family gathers to share a meal and enjoy time together. This is a great way to get to know our community, and everyone is welcome.

Leadership

Covenant Shreveport is led by a plurality of pastor/elders who each operate within their individual gifting to give leadership to an area of focus within the church. These leaders operate as peers within the organizational structure embracing a horizontal or “out front” leadership model rather than a “top down” model. As such, Covenant does not have a singular “Senior Pastor” or “Lead Pastor,” but, instead, a pastoral team that leads and teaches.
This model is based on the New Testament example of eldership (Acts 14:23; 15:2; 20:17; Philippians 1:1; Titus 1:5; James 1:1; 5:14; 1 Peter 1:1; 5:1). These men were to look after the Church’s health, govern the Church’s direction, teach the Church sound doctrine, defend the Church against false teachers, encourage faithfulness among God’s people, and confront and gently deal with the presence of sin in the faith community. The qualifications for these men as laid out in Scripture are very clear and very demanding (1 Timothy 2:11-3:7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-3). They are to be devout, prayerful, men of integrity who have known Christ for some time, are above reproach, sexually pure, self-controlled, able to teach and defend sound doctrine, free from the love of money, good managers of their own homes and families, hospitable, and having a good reputation with people outside the church.
